Histogram Notes

Understanding the camera’s histogram.

The histogram shows how much of your image contains fregions of different brightness levels.

      • Base exposure adjustments on the histogram, not on how bright the image appears.

Dark adapted eyes can fool you into thinking pictures are too bright when they’re not.

Choose exposure setting so histogram is shifted as far to the right as possible without overexposing the sky or other bright subjects without introducing too much noise.

This ensures photos have the broadest range of post-processing options.

When all the data is piled on the left side, the image is severely underexposed.

When the data is all on the right side, the image is overexposed.

Data should be distributed as evenly as possible to get the most out of the exposure for post processing.
