Yosemite Moonrise Monday, October 25, 2026

This is the shot I want to get, and here’s how to do it.

This shot is from the app, Planit Pro, and from the book on Astrophotography by Mike Shaw.

At 4:30 p.m. on October 25, 2026, park in the Tunnel View parking lot in Yosemite National Park. From 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. set up gear using a remote shutter release cable and best tripod, exactly midway along the viewing overlook facing east. Aim and focus at the top of Half Dome.

Use a 500mm lens with Sony A7R V.

Exposure settings:

  • ISO 400
  • f/5.6
  • 1/400 shutter speed

Top half of the moon will appear at 6:06 p.m.

Confirm focus on the moon between 6:06 p.m. and 6:11 p.m. by capturing and reviewing images on the LCD.

At 6:12 p.m. I will press the shutter release button and capture the image shown above. This is the goal of my plan.

Want to join me there? It’ll probably be crowded with onlookers and photographers… hence the early arrival plan. Maybe arrive even earlier.
